Environmental regenerative initiatives at Lynton Downs
|
Lynton Downs is located in a dramatic and unique part of New Zealand where the mountains meet the sea.
There is a vast array of biodiversity here on the station. Many different species of flora and fauna exist at Lynton Downs and our vision is to protect and enhance what is here for generations to come. We support this by shutting off areas of native bush, fencing off waterways and gullies to allow natives to continue to regenerate and planting native trees , in turn helping the wildlife and environment. We are supported by Environment Canterbury and we support Trees That Count, click to read more about it. Rachel has set up a small nursery on farm and we are actively learning about seed sourcing and propagation so we can use these trees especially the podocarps on farm as part of our on-going commitment and goals. Kaikōura has been recognised as one of the world’s best places to see the night sky. In 2024, most of the Kaikōura district was named an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, meaning our night skies are officially protected as some of the darkest and clearest anywhere on Earth. This recognition isn’t just about stargazing—it’s also about caring for local wildlife like the endangered Hutton’s shearwater, a seabird whose young can become disoriented by artificial lights. By managing outdoor lighting carefully, the community is helping protect both the stars above us and the special species that live here. The Kaikōura Dark Sky Project is about more than conservation—it’s about connection. With very little light pollution, you can see the Milky Way, shooting stars, and even distant galaxies with the naked eye. The project encourages locals and visitors to enjoy the night sky in its natural state, while also promoting Kaikōura as a world-class destination for astronomy and nature experiences. By supporting this project, we’re proud to help protect something truly unique for future generations to enjoy. |
